Caroline Catz: 'Even though Louisa and Doc Martin love each other it may not be sensible to have a relationship'

Caroline Catz reveals it’s make or break time for Doc Martin and Louisa in the final episode of the Cornish comedy-drama on Monday.

Caroline, who plays Louisa, told What's on TV: “Louisa and the Doc (Martin Clunes) have been on big journey in their relationship during this series. Then, true to Doc Martin, there’s a mad, interesting and insane situation that takes them on this other journey!”

What’s on TV can reveal things take an unexpected turn in the Ellingham’s relationship when Mrs Annie Winton, played by Gemma Jones, kidnaps the Doc!

The Doc’s priorities quickly change from his relationship to survival when a house call to Annie Winton (Gemma) turns nasty. Terrified of husband Jim dying from his malignant tumour Annie demands Doc treats Jim at home so he doesn’t have to go to hospital.

Meanwhile, Louisa is left wondering why her estranged husband hasn’t turned up for their make-or-break dinner…

But while everyone else thinks the Doc has done a runner, Louisa isn’t so sure. She enlists the help of Pc Penhale (John Marquez) and retraces Martin’s steps to the Winton farm, where Annie’s got her gun!

Will it be curtains for the couple, one way or the other?

Caroline explained: ‘Martin has this great integrity. He’s a real anti-hero in a way, and has his own quirky charisma, which Louisa loves.

“She puts up with him because he’s a kind, considerate person who finds it really difficult to express himself. But even though they love each other it may not be sensible for them to have a relationship.”

The final episode of Doc Martin screens on ITV, Monday, November 2 at 9pm.

  1. Caroline Catz has been very loyal to the show but since Clunes changed the Doc's character ( see the real Doc in series 1) the Martin - Louisa storyline has been rubbish. Given the plots for series 4,5,6 & 7 the show should have ended after series 3. Since Minghella left this show it has been written by sadists to be viewed by masochists.

  2. Anonymous: I disagree emphatically. When I saw the series had returned, I literally giggled. It's a great show, with a surprisingly funny and serious back story, and now the plot expands as all stories do...only better. Personally? I'm thrilled for a "Dose of Doc Martin" again each week. Perhaps that'll cure my masochism, per your short-sighted diagnosis.

  3. Have thoroughly enjoyed the series and eclectic cast of characters. We were looking forward to Series 7, but after two episodes, conclude the formula has gone stale. Comedy is predictable and the characters do not evolve except for Bert & Al failing at every new oppty.
No one is ever successful or happy in the end.
Please buy a new template, or put the show out to sea.
    It's had a great run, but................and,,,,,,,,,,,or,,,,,,,,,but......and...............or...

    1. I don't know what you're on about. Series 7 was definitely the best yet. you were very aware of the struggle Martin and Louisa were dealing with yet at the same time there were many quirky funny moments throughout. Loved the ending! Finally a happy ending for the Doc - or is it???

    4. I agree, but only to a point. I thought the first four episodes were well done. In the fifth episode, I thought too much attention was given to the old dog formula and was focus too much on the vet. Episode six was about Danny resurrecting old jealousies from Martin. He became the fly in the ointment in this episode. The seventh episode was certainly the most confusing and weakest of the episodes. I still having problems trying to figure out the scenes where Dr. T acts like she was acquiring dementia. Perhaps the writers were setting up the series for episode 8?? Episode 8 was good but not at the same level as previous series ending episodes. Honestly, I expected much more drama, like was the case in S6.

  4. This show, from the beginning has had quality actors, top notch directing and very good script writers. But what really sets this show apart from every show I have watched is the tremendous chemistry between Martin Clunes and Caroline Catz. This has been the main drawing card, at least for me. Hope there will be a series 8.

    1. You got it right, there was indeed tremendous chemistry between Martin and Caroline, it kept me coming back for more. During the entire series I felt like an extremely thirsty person who was only given drops of water to stay alive, the scenes between them were never enough, I would have been happy to see more love scenes.

  9. Have loved this show, great acting but after watching finale of series 7, can't imagine a series 8 as finale of series 7 says it all ! Good luck to writers and producers if you give it a go for series 8, coud be repetitious and redundant !

  10. If the show intends to be more drama than comedy how about Louisa accidently runs over the Doc and spends the life insurance on a grand life in London?

  11. The mean, not rude, doc in series 6 was out of character and I would love to know why. Series 7 was perfect gradually offering hope but no guarantee to the most interesting couple on tv. I am hoping for a happy ending with doc for the most beautiful woman in the world and with Audry Hepburn talent.
